Council vs Counsel – What’s the difference?

Council is a group of people who have administrative duties. For example:

Five people are running for the Student Council this semester.

That means a Councillor is an administrator or an elected government member.

Counsel means providing advice or information to others. It is a verb (or action word) so you can add “ing” (counselling) or “ed” (counselled) to it. For example:

The Company provides stress management counselling for its employees.

That makes a Counsellor someone who is trained to provide advice and guidance to others. For example:

The school has appointed a Counsellor to assist troubled students.
