These days, semi-colons tend to be reserved for formal documents (such as annual reports) or in literature. They can be useful if you wish to link closely related sentences. For example:
John made dinner last night; it was delicious.
It’s more common to see a colon. They look like this :
Colons are usually used after the phrase “for example” or before you begin a list.
E.g. To make the sauce, you will need the following ingredients:
- Tomatoes
- Basil
- Garlic
- Salt
